“Mega-Sports Events, Gentrification and Social Mobilization in Rio de Janeiro” - Experiences from Metrô Mangueira
2017
Master's thesis Development management UT503 - University of Agder 2017 In order to promote gentrification of the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian government and the municipality of Rio de Janeiro have actively used Mega-Sports Events (MSE) in urban planning. Examples are tax cuts and the legalization of various measures for large-scale urban programs, to prepare the city for hosting these prestigious events. Whilst trying to fulfil the obligations from MSEs, the host city denies its citizens access to democratic participation and thereby their right to the city. The promises made to the international sportive federations regarding upgraded infrastructure, sportive arenas, media covera…
Democratisation of Education and reduction in inequalities of opportunities : an obvious link?
2005
05057http://www.leeds.ac.uk/educol/documents/143161.htm; Democratisation of Education is currently presented as an obvious way to reduce social inequalities of opportunities in life. But this consensual view is seldom assessed precisely. In this communication, we intend to put in perspective what we know concerning the evolution of both the inequalities towards education and the inequalities in life chances, in France, since the 50's. Has the society become less unequal at the same time education was expanding ? First, we shall present a synthesis of the controversial topic of democratisation in France : if some levels of education are now achieved by everybody (and so "democratized"), ineq…
COMMUTING PATTERNS IN RIGA AGGLOMERATION: EVIDENCE FROM A SURVEY ANALYSIS OF YOUTH
2021
In the last ten years the evident changes of settlement patterns through suburban growth near to capital city of Latvia occurred. Increase of distance between home and routine activity places as well as changes of public transport and rapid increase of car ownership initiated significant changes in commuting patterns of inhabitants living outside of Riga. Although the commuting from suburban area to Riga is recently broadly studied, however these researches focused primarily on able-bodied population leaving behind school-age children and young people. The aim of this study is to analyse commuting patterns of young people aged 12 to 17 moving from outskirts of Riga to school located in Riga…
Graphical models for estimating network determinants of multi-destination trips in Sicily
2017
Abstract This paper proposes a two-step approach for analysing the main determinants of multi-destination trip behaviour. It is based on a combination of graphical models and of a multinomial logistic regression model; the aim is to analyse direct and indirect effects of a wide set of tourist- and trip-related characteristics on multi-destination trip behaviour. Empirical data have been derived from a frontier survey of approximately 4000 incoming tourists in Sicily (Italy) at the end of their trip. Results suggest that multi-destination trips depend directly on the length of stay, the number of previous visits and motivation for the trip, and only indirectly on the interview month, travel …
Profilin 1 is essential for retention and metabolism of mouse hematopoietic stem cells in bone marrow
2014
How stem cells interact with the microenvironment to regulate their cell fates and metabolism is largely unknown. Here we demonstrated that the deletion of the cytoskeleton-modulating protein profilin 1 (pfn1) in hematopoietic stem cell (HSCs) led to bone marrow failure, loss of quiescence, and mobilization and apoptosis of HSCs in vivo. A switch from glycolysis to mitochondrial respiration with increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) level was also observed in HSCs on pfn1 deletion. Importantly, treatment of pfn1-deficient mice with the antioxidant N-acetyl-l-cysteine reversed the ROS level and loss of quiescence of HSCs, suggesting that the metabolism is mechanistically linked to the cell…
Academia in cardiovascular radiology: are we doing enough for the future of the subspecialty?
2021
Aim To explore barriers to academic activities that cardiovascular radiology-oriented radiology trainees face worldwide. Materials and methods An international call for participation in an online survey was distributed via social media and radiological societies to radiology trainees. Questions covered barriers and involvement in academic activities during radiology training. Participants interested in cardiovascular radiology were selected for analysis with appropriate statistical methods. Results Of the 892 respondents, 120 (13.5%) reported an interest in cardiovascular imaging. The majority (63.3%, 76/120) were from Europe and 57.5% (69/120) were men. There were gender discrepancies in a…

Centri storici e Smart Town: mobilità sostenibile e infrastrutture virtuali
2013
Conservation and Development implementation are an essential combination when working in marginal and usually non-coastal areas, which identify the Southern Italy land. Starting from the extreme marginalization and the neglect conditions, reinterpreting them as an opportunity to re-foundation, can be a smart strategy. Mobility, marginal infrastructure and the extreme weakness which interest lots of users who characterize the population (mostly the elderly and the children) might represent a high significance criticality. Two linked focuses, one about sustainable mobility and the other one about the virtual cities network and public utilities, more specifically about health care public utili…
